A program that makes it easy to update the Windows 7 boot animation and text. Please tell me if you find any problems or design cool animations!
Some parts of / contributions to the program are released as open-source.
If you wish to understand how this all works you can visit a thread at Seven Forums. Joakim, marcusj0015, and myself (thaimin) hashed out the details there.

Windows 7 Boot Updater (643.5 KB, updated 2011-05-03)
Command Line Version (272 KB, updated 2011-05-03)
Original Windows 7 Boot Animation as BMPs (4.42 MB, updated 2010-09-01)
Grayscale Windows 7 Boot Animation as BMPs (1.67 MB, updated 2010-09-01)
If you would like to design your own interfaces, I have created a DLL that can update the boot screen and load and save bootskin files. Please contact me for more information.
Details
Current Version: v0 Beta 1 (v0.0.1.1)
Features
- Modifies the boot animation, colors, text, and background
- Modifies the resume from hibernation screen as well
- Will create the animation from 105 BMP, PNG, GIF, or TIFF images or use a single (non-animated) image
- Does not require any other applications (like ImageX)
- Designed to be idiot-proof by having numerous checks
- Automatically backs-up the modified files
- Does not require test-signing or no-integrity-checks to be enabled
- Works for all versions of Windows 7: any language, any edition, 32-bit or 64-bit, RTM or SP1
- Available in English, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, French, Dutch, Hungarian, Hebrew, and Vietnamese (contribute a translation)
- Works even if your setup has the hidden "System Reserved" partition
- Can be run as a GUI, command-line program, or installer/uninstaller
Changes
v0 Beta 1 (v0.0.1.1)
- Able to work with already modified files (that were modified with this version of this program or later)
- Improved BCD device detection and elimination of redundant error messages
- Fixed many problems with the installer which caused it to crash
- Improved backup system and unlocking files when possible
- Improved patching system
- Smaller BS7 files (but they cannot be opened by older versions of the program)
- Includes translations for Spanish, French, Dutch, Hungarian, Hebrew, and Vietnamese (contribute a translation)
- Improved language support including external translation loading (means there can be language packs and translators can see how the translations look)
- Numerous other minor changes and fixes
Todo
- Load bootskin from modified files
- Bootskin sharing system
- Allow integration into boot.wim/install.wim
- Change animation location, size, frame rate, length, and loop frame
- Work on systems that have a native resolution less than 1024x768
- Work with EFI booting
- Work with PXE booting
How to Use
The Animation
If you choose to change the animation you will have to make an animation! The animation is:
- 105 frames (if there are less frames the last frame will be repeated as necessary)
- Each frame is 200x200px (resized if necessary)
- 15 frames / sec
- First 4 seconds play once then the last 3 seconds play in a loop
The program loads a folder containing all the frames as PNGs, GIFs, BMPs, TIFs, or JPEGs images. The files will be played in alphabetical order. If you are numbering them, use the same number of digits for all numbers (e.g. 001, 002, ..., 103, 105). For 'historical' reasons, the animation can also be a folder containing a single BMP named "activity.bmp" that is 200x21000px.
Transparency (in PNGs and GIFs) is supported (except when a message is behind the animation).
Videos, such as AVI and MPEG, can be converted into a sequence of PNGs using ffmpeg. I have made a utility to make this very simple: video2png.
You can make the animation with any picture-editing software, but the following are recommended:
- Jasc Animation Shop (free), to export the animation:
- Choose "Edit -> Select All"
- Choose "File -> Save Frames As..."
- Change "Save as type" to "Portable Network Graphics (*.png)"
- Click "Save"
- Corel Jasc Animation Shop
- Adobe Flash, to export the animation:
- Choose "File -> Export -> Export Movie..."
- Change "Save as type" to "PNG Sequence (*.png)"
- Click "Save"
- Adobe After Effects
- Adobe Premiere, to export the animation:
- Choose "File -> Export -> Media..."
- Change "Format" to "PNG"
- On the "Video" tab, set width and height to 200, aspect ratio to "Square Pixels (1.0)", and check "Export as sequence"
- Click "Export"
- Adobe Photoshop, to export the animation:
- Choose "File -> Export -> Render Video..."
- Select "Image Sequence" and choose "PNG"
- Click "Render"
The Background Image
The background image is a 1024x768 full-color image. The size cannot currently be changed. It takes a moment for it to show, and the background color may be visible for a brief moment, so make sure to pick a color that is suitable.
Running the Installer Silently
The standalone installer supports the switches /s /q /silent or /quiet for silent installation.
Troubleshooting
This program is dangerous and it will mess up some computers. Here are solutions to the most common problems and how to recover your computer in case of disaster.
Manually Restoring Winload.exe
If booting freezes or you get stuck forever in the Windows Recovery Environment then you need to manually restore winload.exe. The program automatically makes backups, and you need to copy winload~1.exe to winload.exe. See this page for specific instructions.
Failed to disable.... Error Message
Failed to disable bootres / winload security in winload.exe, this is likely due to it being a modified file or a recent Windows Update changed something
If you are getting the above error message from the program and have previously used an earlier version of the program you need restore backups first. In the program choose "Options > Restore Backups". Repeat until it says no backups were restored.
Other Problems
If you have other problems please email me. Include any error messages you get, the output of boot-info, and any relevant files (if the error is about bootmgr, send me bootmgr, if it is about winload.exe.mui send me that file).

Great tool!
I managed to change my bootloader very easily thx to this program.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to tweak his PC a bit :D
I also contributed a new language (Dutch/Nederlands).
Hope to see it soon :)
Not working in 32bit system ?!!!!
For problems/issues, please email me. This does work on 32-bit systems. There are a few cases where it doesn't work, but it isn't dependent on if it is a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Please email me with more detailed information on the problem.
Hi I get this error on Windows 7 BootSkin. I am using Windows 7 HomePremium 64 Bit, I can install 32 bit apps. Service Pack 1. It still does install thought and it works

Can you please provide a link to the boot skin "The Great Orion Nebula M42"? I would like to investigate the problem. I am glad it still works, but I would like to fix the problem. When does this error show up?
see I used it once it worked and then when i tried to do that again it showed
"There was a problem updating the file:
Faild to disabel bootres/ winload security in winresume.exe,This is lickly due to being a modified file or a recent Windows update changed something" So i say that don't hurry take your time and desine what you want dont hurry and press apply
Hey,I got one question. When I try to change the animation nothing comes up. The explorer to choose files(animation) does not show up when I click 'animation' even when I change it from 'simple' to 'complete' it still does not change... What can I do to fix this? Please reply EARLY! Thanks! :D
@Raunak
This error is because you modified the files already and the program cannot modify already modified files. You need to use "Options > Restore Backups". In the next version the program will be able to modify files that have been previously modified and this error won't show up as often.
@Amin
This is a strange issue. The file chooses box should pop right up. There is nothing you can do right now, however the next version has a few changes to the animation selection, so maybe the problem will just "go away".
Thank You So Much Jeff Bush and again THANKS!!
hi..whenever i open the program, it says "there was a error verifying winload.exe.mui"
"The winload.exe.mui file could not be read as a PE file"
"Go to options and select an appropriate winload.exe.mui"
what does this mean??
hi! I have a problem ...
i cant find winload.exe.mui and winresume.exe.mui ....
in explorer i can find it but in the win boot dont . show it (program cant find)... i search it in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\En-US sorry for my english im from Slovakia ... ;)
@blackcat / Mike
It sounds like your winload.exe.mui is missing or corrupt, at least where it is expected to be found. Can you please email me with the language of your Windows installation, the output of "bcdedit /enum all" from an admin command line, and where you think the winload.exe.mui file should be? Thanks.
Hi
i´ve a problem with background images.
I get it to work on diffrent Computers but on one computer it doesn´t work. The only diffrence is that there is no SP1 installed.
I installed SP1 but forgot to uninstall the new boot screen. After that i retryed to install my bootstyle. It failed and i think the backup feature gave me the pre SP1 bootloader files back :/
So i can´t still use background images.
@Jeff I'm using windows 64bit english.. the output is
C:\Windows\system32>bcdedit/enum

i am able to see the winload.exe.mui file in c:\WINDOWS\System32\En-US\
but whenever i try to locate it from the win7boot updater program, its not showing..thanks
Error when i start it. I run win7 x64 ultimate.
It shows a lot of errors when i start it.
Something about system.runtime.interop.services ...
error while gettin winload.exe path... then system.management.object...
Is there a solution to this ?
Could you please add support for 16:9 displays? All the animations + messages appear stretched when changing from 4:3 displays to widescreen.
Cheers, Paul
Hi, I had the same problem as Mike and blackcat.
It is necessary to fetch the winload.exe.mui file > C:\WINDOWS\System32\votre language(tongue)
Then right click > properties > Safety(Security) > to Modify > to Add > renter your user's name Windows in the part(party) white. Restart Windows and enjoy :-)
Thanks to the designer of the log for your work.
P.S : i sorry for my my english.
As for winload.exe.mui, you should try to download again, the file must be corrupt. As for all other issues with the boot skin not being able to be aplied, you MUST do OPTIONS and then RESTORE BACKUPS. It seems the program detects the default boot is not there, so it will not apply your skin. So after each time you have a custom skin, and want to apply a new skin, RESTORE BACKUPS first.
Hello,
this is a great tool I had been looking for quite a while. But I cant set any new gif animation instead of the windows default animation(even tried the green windows animation on this page ;) ) but it always appears as static.
Hello,
After more research I found your page.
You made one of the few (if not the only) programs, which replaces the Windows startup screen 7.
Congratulations.
I was very happy to find your site.
However, I encounter a problem and I can not use it.
I have indeed, "...this likely due to it being a modified file..." message when I try to apply a file .BS7 downloaded from deviantart.com.
I think it is because I am a French user and therefore not the same version as your file winload.exe.
Do you have a solution or some ideas to help me?
(my PC is Acer 7740 under Windows 7 Home Premium x64)
Thank you
The win7bootupdater keeps on saying that it has an error when its up to updating winload.exe
Hi! I have a same problem ...

i have tried to run an instaler i created, it doesn't load, i think i goofed, i made a new one that should work, but it says it needs to uninstal the first boot image i made, and in uninstall mode it freezes and my computer kills the process any ideas, manualy delete the last installed files, where do they get placed?
hey, just wanted to say i figured out that my first install infact works, when i started my build on this computer, i shut off gui boot in msi config, boot area, so it was preventing my boot animation, its all good now thanks for your help.
men thanks you are the best. pls how can i learn programming and hacking.
I tried the Complete option in order to be able to edit the background as an image, but unfortunately that resulted in a bootup that would just reboot before showing anything. The other way works fine, where you can only change the animation to something else. Would be nice to just be able to put an image there, even if all it supports is 1024x768. Good luck with the program.
Is there a way to change the font type?
Hi, my win 7 boot changer crasses when i try to load a bs7 file. when i try to open the file with the program it's giving me an error:The file 'The element 'BootSkin7' has invalid child element 'BackgroundColor'. List of possible element expected: 'Winload'.'Could not be validated
what do i do?. thnaks
bonjour et merci pour ce super

comment puis faire pour installer une nouvele animation car le log me refuse systematiquement de le faire:
there was a probleme updating the files:

file or a recent windows update changed something.
merci a toi de me repondre et merci encore.
Hi, Jeff,
After some windows update the bootscreen of Win7 reverted to Vista one, and I cannot change it anymore (your program shows that it cannot update the copyright section of winload.exe). So I guess I should wait for v0.0.0.12?
Some Info: Updated on 15.04.11, updates are from 12.04.11, versions of winload and winresume: 6.1.7601.17556. Version of Win 7 Boot Updater - 0.0.0.11
Hi, BMP RGBA (32bit + transparency is supported ? ) can you say me, the soft for create panorama vertical ? i use irfanview butt the output is only 24bit (RGB) !
And your soft is great !
Does this work with cracked windows too? X-treme loader for example?
Great app! But last week Windows Update installed some updates and changed the boot animation to default. When I'm trying to get it back to my own I everytime get this error msg:
"Failed to disable bootmgr.exe security, this is likely due to using a modified version of bootmgr (or a recent Windows Update changed something)"
Are you planning to release some update solving this? :)
This works great =D Made my own gifs. Simple to use ^_^ Even donated ty. Keep up the good work. = D Weird my last comment vanished o.O
Hi, got an Error when i'am starting the Programm.
http://img6.imagebanana.com/img/1m367cne/Unbenannt.png
Iam using Win7 Ultimate 64-Bit.
Thanks :)
Eeehm.. I think this program would be perfect, I have a login screen changer and it's easy and great like this, but I cant get your program working, when I click apply its seems to work for 10 seconds but then it said (there was a problem updating the file's:
failed to update copyright text in winload.exe, this is likely due to it being a modified file or a recent windows update changed something)
What can I do to make it work???
Hei there,
i tried it and well it kind of works. but sadly at boot-time there shows nothing(!) up its a totally black screen. without the animation or the text i changed. it's win7 prof.
michael
Yeah, I had the same issue as Raunak, with
Faild to disabel bootres/ winload security in winresume.exe,This is lickly due to being a modified file or a recent Windows update changed something"
I edited it once, and I was given this response. When I tried to back it up, it said no files were backed up. What can i do to get it working again? I was experimenting and I screwed it up.
Worked great on my x64 win 7. After MS major patch Tuesday no longer worked. Thanks
Erverything works fine but im in windows 7 64 bit home premium and i recently updated to service pack 1. when you update it changes winlogon.exe so the program can not complete applying the boot skin. whats nice is that even though it did not complete it, it did not screw up my pc. Keep up the good work and i hope you come up with a fix soon.
After a new update , boot updater refuse to install a new picture ,need a update
Hello
Just wondering since new update, my boot animation has reverted to Vista Basic is there any way to restore it back to the default Windows 7 boot animation...
This does not seem to work, it will not allow me to apply changes because of winload.exe, it says something like it can't disable the bootres/winload security, probably because it is a modified file or a windows update has changed something.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii jeff when i installed my bootscreen with software then my windows stopped booting even recovery console failed to recover.
Hi! Great tool! I've managed to change the boot image of a 2008 r2 server as well by first copying the bootres.dll and bootres.dll.mui to the appropriate folder. The only problem is that bitlocker doesn't like it when test signing is enabled. I now have to input my bitlocker key when I start my laptop. If I use the TestsigningOff util will this fix the issue? And if so, will my custom bootscreen survive this procedure?
i need help, i tried it on win 7 ultimate 64 bit, but i doesn't work, when the laptop start it starts in safe mode and repairing the system.
Hi,
As soon as run the Win7BootUpdater64.exe, nothing happens. However, werfault.exe runs in the task manager for a few seconds then both tasks are ended by itself. Windows 7 x64 Enterprise SP1. Any suggestions ?
Sorry for the delay in approving comments and responding to them.
First, thanks for everyone's support and compliments, even though it doesn't completely work yet!
A new version is coming very soon to address many of your issues. Hopefully I can publish it this weekend (Apr 23, 2011).
Updating error when running the program more than once: (@George, @kiki, @Jay)
As @Timothy Duch points out, you need to do "Options" > "Restore Backups". Repeat until it says nothing is restored. In the upcoming version this will no longer be an issue.
@Mik, @Acuraspore, @Tim - Most people don't get that error the first time they run the file. I will be contacting you soon for more details so that I can fix it.
winload.exe.mui error (@blackcat, @Dan)
You cannot see the file within the program since it is a 32-bit program and your Windows is 64-bit. The System32 folder is redirected to the SysWOW64 folder (which contains no boot files). Use "Select 'Windows' Folder..." in the "Options" menu to get around this. It uses tricks to get around the redirection. The bigger issue I don't know why it thinks it is corrupted. Maybe @Timothy Duch is right. Please send me your winload.exe.mui file.
@Christ8phe - Removing the security actually helps? My program removes the security on files that it works with. What users had permissions originally?
System.Runtime.Interop.Services error (@Mark G, @Michael)
These are due to the use of a third-party bootloader or other 'interesting' boot setup. This should be mostly fixed in the next version.
Installer problems (@chrisk)
I am sorry but I let numerous bugs get through in the installer. The new version will remedy this, and can even uninstall the files from the previous not-so-nice install.
Windows Update removed custom animation (@Max, @Sd'C, @John Mc, @Adam Halperin, @TheSweeTiger, @13th, @Harrison Pace)
When you install SP1 or KB2506014 without uninstalling the bootskin it causes the boot to revert to normal and not let you apply it anymore. This will be fixed in the next version, but you must remedy your current situation first:
@Tester X, @michael - This problem has been reported by another person as well. I will be contacting you soon for more details so that I can fix it.
@Benjie - I will be contacting you soon for more details so that I can fix it.
@Syed - That is a strange problem. The new version may just fix it (I fixed tons of little startup issues). However if it doesn't please email me.
@MicaH - Someone else reported the BitLocker problem as well. At this time I have no idea how to work around it. As of Alpha v9 I no longer use testsigning, so that tool will have no effect. BitLocker is croaking on the fact that the file doesn't have the same hash that Microsoft designated it.
@Max - The pre-SP1 files should work with background images. See above for the other issue.
@Paul - The only possible 'support' would be to squish the images so that when stretched they look somewhat normal. They will become blurrier due to being squished. I have thought about adding a feature like that in the future.
@Timothy Duch - Thanks for your input!
@Aditya - The program currently does not support animated GIFs. Possibly in the future it will. You have to break up the animation into many images.
@Leonard - Learn it by trying it. See this comment.
@ray - You can change it manually, however, it was a complete bitch to implement in the program. However, since you can have whatever background image you want, you can use whatever font you want to draw text on the background image.
@dragon - It looks like you have an old BS7 file. The format was changed in Alpha v10. If you send me the file I can update it to work.
@azzuro - The program cannot properly load the transparency in RGBA BMPs. However, PNGs work just fine with full-transparency. The program can piece together all of the frames for you. No need to create the actual activity.bmp file.
@Slim Shady - You have to get a Windows 7 Install DVD or Recovery Disk. Using that you can force it into the Recovery Console and restore the backups. See http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/.
@- - No idea if this works with cracked Windows. I use legit software.
after the last updates i had this error
"There was a problem updating the files:
Failed to disable bootmgr.exe security, this is likely due to it being a
modified file or a recent Windows Update changed something"
I just used this and it worked for the first time but I cannot modify my bootscreen twice. I tried using the backed up files to no avail, I tried using System Restore to no avail, and I used the virgin files from another Windows 7 machine to no avail. I cannot use this program to modify my bootscreen further.
Please work diligently toward the next release with multi-update support.
Best Tool 5 Stars !!! ;-)
i think it dont work on netbooks the netbooks have a 10inc screen and 1027x600 resulution have try to chance the picture resulution but it dont work
someone got an osx boot animation for me? i transform my windows 7 in osx lion.

Is there a way to convert a JPG or BMP file into .bs7
( I can't found any choice of boot skin)

For when the new version that solves the problems
There is an update for KB2506014 here @ micosoft center. just do search. and download your version http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx
I have sp1 in and all updates. Your program works great. running Win 7 professional 64 bit . Nice app but microsoft updates keep screwing it up. You will probably need to keep up with them a little while. And watch for update fixes.
Update date release is 4/11/2011. just copy and paste the hotfix # KB2506014 and do a search. My hotfix would not let me uninstall it. So I went looking for one to write over it and got lucky with this update fix.
Let me know if this helped you guy's and gal's.
Save the updated hot fix you may need it when you change to something else
I have made an winrar exe that automatically sign all of your certificates : here is the batch inside :

Setting "test signing on" for both the bootmgr and current, so that make sure windows can boot up normally in every drive right ?. When you released v8, a lot of people has used this batch to bypass and it worked very well.
Plz take a look at this pack http://pakistanshooter.deviantart.com/art/Bootscreen-for-W7BU-v11-184939667
Will my instruction works well for everyone ?
sorry for my english,
btw, you're awesome, i think it will be much better if you can bypass the size of the logo (max 200x200). Win7 6801 can used an 254x34 image without scale down to 200x200..
Why can I get alpha color when use simple mode ?
once more bug, if i use the bootskin auto installer and my bootmgr is different from windows drive , I can set an manual path to it and installation failed
STAY away Renders Windows 7 Useless and Unbbotable, 6 complete system restores to verify program faults in every area. You cant even restor you pc you have to completely wipe windows and re add OS. DANGER DANGER DANGER
Ho provato e riprovato cambia la schermata avvio solo con i file bs7 che ho scaricato da voi i file bmp non li legge ho windows seven ultimate un aiuto grazie
@tatar - See my previous post and the posts by @RustCrew
@Sterling - For now you can restore the backups (Options > Restore Backups). The next version should be coming soon, I am doing final testing now.
@GEORG - Thanks!
@tatar - If the native resolution of the screen is less than 1024x768 in either direction then Windows 7 will use the Vista-style animation. This may worked around in a future version.
@sinchoa - see http://newage-os.com/viewforum.php?f=106 which has many OS boot skins
@kungfuserge - You need to set the image as either the animation or of the background
@djdanip - soon!
@RustCrew - Thanks for the clarification on working around the Microsoft Windows Update!
@pakistanshooter
The certificates, signing, and test signing are no longer required
Changing the size of the animation is one of my future goals!
The simple mode does support simple alpha color. Since the boot process doesn't actually support transparency, I have to deal with it in my program. In simple mode the text is not exactly right in my program, so I cannot resolve the transparency properly.
The next version should improve the detection of the proper bootmgr file and work correctly when set manually.
@Bradley Smith - This program is still experimental. Hence the big red letters. You can restore your computer, but you need to do it manually. There is a guide on this page ("Recovering winload.exe Manually") but apparently you didn't read that. It works for a large portion of the people who try it. I am still working out the final bugs.
@arrigo antonio - Sorry you are having problems, but I will need more information to help you, and I will need it in English.
I did follow the instructions on restoring backups but I am stuck with my original boot screen and I am unable to modify it because the software states that the files may have already been modified. I await your next release. Thanks from a fellow programmer.'
Not working for me man. :(
Here's a screenshot: http://i52.tinypic.com/24z9dw5.png
Please help me out if you can. :(
Hi,
Nice software! Is the maximum size of the image really 200x200px or I can place a size screen image like a wallpaper?
If yes, is it limited by file system or your software?

SEGA THEME (enjoy)
just got done with sega theme using this resource and other made tutorial to download
http://www.2shared.com/file/oDmTCH4w/Sega_theme.html
that will teach me to read the above posts before i post i tryed the restore backups & yep it works im still trying to figure out animated pictures & background pictures but all in all a truly great program thanks jeff your a diamond
I m using windows7 premium 64-bit on vaio, After Installing a new theme from this on resuming my computer started windows7 repair.
i used themes from deviantart http://se7enultimate.deviantart.com/art/Mac-OS-X-Boot-Screen-for-Win7-200060850
Not functional on other language than english :-(
@Sterling - Use "Options > Restore Backups" until it reports no files were restored. If you are still getting this error, what file is it saying is already modified?
@Musavvir - Have you run "Apply" more than once? If so, follow the instructions for @Sterling above. If you are still getting this error please email me with your Windows 7 version and if you have the Windows Update KB2506014 installed.
@Gustavo Oliveira - The 200x200px animation restriction is built into ntoskrnl.exe. I plan to modify this in the future, but it will be more difficult. You're welcome!
@rama1 - Glad you fixed the problem! You're welcome.
@JerryClinton - Awesome!
@brahmajivv - This happens on some machines. I am trying to find out why. The next version (coming this weekend) could fix the problem.
@mirecek1965 - You tried every language? It should work on any language (I know many people have successfully used it on German Windows). There are some problems that effect ALL languages though. I am working on these.
@Jeff: All of my files have been restored. Upon attempting to apply my theme the program notifies me that "There was a problem updating the files: Failed to update the copyright text in winload.exe, this is likely due to it being a modified file or a recent Windows Update changed something"
@Jeff: This error only occurs when I attempt to modify the "(c) Microsoft Corporation" text on either the boot screen or the resume screen. If I make any other modifications your software works.
At the first time..I can change...
I met this Error
There was a problem updating the files:
Failed to disable bootres / winload security in winload.exe, this is likely due to it being a modified file or a recent windows update changed something.
Could you please tell me how to get out of this situation.. I have an awesome animation want to change!
Thank you..
i can't change my background image. when i change it to my picture and then restart my computer, it not change anything except windows animation. can somebody help me?
@Sterling - That is odd. I would recommend waiting for me to finish the next version as it does the string replacement very difference, and that just might fix the problem
@Chris Len - You need to run "Options > Restore Backups" until it says no files were restored.
@john - The current version has problems with the latest Windows Updates and the background image. Please wait for the next version.
The first beta of the program has been released: v0 Beta 1. This will hopefully address many issues people have been having.
I am curious and been following the postings. Has anyone come across any problems with v0 Beta 1? I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, no service packs installed. I usually wait months before I install them. What are the stories out there regarding this version?
Excellent keep it
hey, loved this program. however, after i did a computer restore and plenty of updates (i tried to hack windows 7 ultimate, and failed) whenever i started my computer with a new boot splash screen using this program, it would go into a repair mode, which lasted a long time, and i usually ended up losing files. i think they changed some file names when i did the windows 7 patch, and it obviously recognized i didn't have the right files for boot, and tried to fix it. do you know if this new beta stops that? i will try it after i make a restore point.
UPDATE: Even new beta version still gives me a "Startup Repair" upon booting. Why, I am unsure -.-*, it had worked before i did a system restore upon my computer.
Specs:
x64 system
windows 7 home premium
6.1.7601 service pack 1 build 7601
SMBIOS Version 2.4
@Timothy Duch
It seems likely that something got majorly confused during your hacking and restoring. Please send me your files and I will look into it:
bootmgr
bootres.dll
winload.exe
winload.exe.mui
winresume.exe
winresume.exe.mui
Also send any backups there are (marked with ~1, ~2, ...)
it rox thats what da status is...xD...thou we still need the ability to change the default rez to higher than 1024x768 ...and well jeff bush knows da rest...xD
hey sir.. where can i get the green colored boot animation... thanks
@sexus - Yes, if only there was a solution for that. Both me and joakim on the forums have failed to do anything with the screen resolution.
@kamoteprotocol - See http://newage-os.com/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=4980
Hi..My system is 64 bit win7 now..before i was using 32-bit[it didnt read any 4GB memory so i changed].
then i met this while i was changing the ani...different from last one i had asked u ...
I did wt u told me as well already.[No files were restored]
There was a problem updating the files:
Failed to update the copyright text in winload.exe, this is likely due to it being a modified file or a recent windows update changed something.
Thank u very much
Hi,Jeff, very much thank you.i just found that if i delete "Microsoft copyright" only "©" be kept.it works..
then if i delete all "© Microsoft copyright",it works as well..if i correct it as "© Anything i want here" or "Anything i want here" without "©",it appear that notification..
Thank u..
After my reboot. I found that.
Message one is about copyright[deleted]
Message two is about starting windows[Changed to Welcome]
Now,the booting interface only shows animation but text.
Hi,
Your instruction on using a background states to set the size to 1024x768 but on my new 16:9 monitor that leaves a black border around the image. What size should I make the background to use? I have not played with just changing sizes etc... so I was just wondering if you knew.
Joe
well dont give up bro we know yall bed workin hard on this so well gladly wait for its implementation, peace
@Chris Len - I will look into this and try to find out what the issue is. Your second problem is what?
@Joe Lore - There is nothing that can be done. The startup sequence only displays as 1024x768. Likely your graphics card / monitor put the black bars around it.
great work by great people have followed posta and forum and was very eager on waiting for (a near) final release....I have tried the beta version being a noob I only went on changing the boot text everything seem to go well and said load was a success but on actual boot up just the logo shows...no text at all......any ideas?
Hey
This is a werry cool tool it works fin in the startup video shnging but when I try to change the background it sajs updated sucessful but wont display the picture when I restart...
Thanks in advce is a werry cool program;)
P.S. Sorry for bad english
I get LOTS of warnings from COMODO Internet Secuirity when I run Windows 7 boot updater.
Why?
@JET - there seems to be a problem with the copyright text at the moment. I am looking into it.
@Zoly - please send me a bootskin that doesn't work and tell me what your Windows is (32 or 64 bit, RTM or SP1).
@Mike - what are the warnings? If they are about it trying to use the Internet, it does this only to find patch definition updates. If you don't allow it to access the Internet it will work fine. If there are other errors please tell me what they are. According to VirusTotal Comodo does not think it is a virus or malware.
Thanx for the reply Jeff
my system is a 32 windows 7 sp1 .. and how to send you a file?
@Jeff
Here's what I get from COMODO:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6232429/bootupdater1.PNG
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6232429/bootupdater2.PNG
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6232429/bootupdater3.PNG
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6232429/bootupdater4.PNG
Thanks!
The first time a buddy of mine saw my startup screen, he freaked. I added a family picture and blackout my screen. I love the custom feel.
Also, @Mike I have COMODO too and have no problems.
Windows 7 Boot Updater Review
Thank you so very much to finding a way around the despicable, annoying "flying balls of fire" animation that Microsoft forced on us when coming out of hibernate! It's so much better with your fix!
Hey thaimin,
Awesome work! Totally loving the boot skin updater. I've been messing around with the LCARSx32 shell recently, so I now have a fully Star-Trek-ified version of the bootup process thanks to your work. I really appreciate it! You are welcome to see the end result, and I hope you don't mind, but I included a copy of your EXE in the zip (with credit given, of course) so that LCARSx32 users wouldn't have to hunt for any additional files for installation.
http://www.galigogames.com/programming/lcars/LCARSwin7bootSkin.zip
Feel free to keep a copy, in case you ever form a compilation of all the Windows 7 boot screens made with your software. And good luck with all your future endeavors!
Awesome work on creating this program. Only trouble I have had is the program not responding when I try to create a boot skin installer.
I would like to share my boot screen in case anyone is interested. Its a beating heart instead of the Windows animation. http://rapidshare.com/files/3321447418/Heart_Beating_Windows_7.bs7
@Zoly - My email is on this page and on the About Me page.
@Mike - Those warnings are about specific features of the program. The "restore" privilege is required to modify system files. The one with the long GUID "{XXXX-XXX...}" is about the WMI, which is used to look up boot configuration data. The last two are about accessing the Internet to find patch updates.
@Dave M - Awesome!
@mgo - Thanks!
@Blink - Incredible! In the next version you will be able to create an installer from a bootskin. And seeing the LCARSx32 is free, it is acceptable to distribute it.
@android_04 - Yes, the installer has problems in the current version. Next version will be fixed.
Hi, After I modified the background, then i am restart my computer, and its keep restarting, it don't showing anything, but if i don't use a background, it can succesfully get into windows.
Hello everyone,
How can I convert this video ?
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E0UJZX21
To do a boot skin with this video
Thanks in advance for you're help,
Summer.
@Boo - This is still happening for some people and I haven't figured out why yet. Please send me your bootmgr file and the output of "bcdedit /enum all" in an administrator console.
@Summer - The best option is to ask the author of the video for the image he used. It will be incredibly better quality then extracting the video itself. If you need to extract it you can use SUPER, FFmpeg, or Adobe Premiere. You will need to correct for the frame rate etc.
Hello, here is my boot a la Dragon :D http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LFJ0U6VG
Hey there. the program runs just fine... except for after running it I have no sound on my computer. HP Support was even unable to get the sound to work. I had to do a system restore to before I installed the new bootscreen to get my sound back.
tnx alot ...
Is Working On Windows SP1 netbook?
Hello Friends,
Just joined the gang. Hope to have good time here.
luv
Riya
I used bootupdater to customize the boot screen on a dual boot Windows 7 ultimate x64 for reverse integration. Then I used the customized install.wim and copied it into the dvd installation by replacing the original install.wim with the customized version and then created an iso. then I went to install it on vmware, and it reverted back to the original bootscreen. Should it happen this way? Is it only designed to work on working existing copy of Windows 7? John
you said it was idiot proof? i tried to use a image of 1920x1200, and now it wont boot anymore XD. could you put something in the next release that will make it impossible to use images that are to big? i gonna ress my pc now XD
when i open Win7BootUpdater , there is a error " fehler beim abrufen des dateipfades winload.exe" and "der pfad winload.exe im bcd ist inkorrekt oder ziel wird zurzeitnicht unterstutzt"
can you help me ?
I'm an animator from Aken,Germany. Just wanted to join you on this forum.
Devender
@Morgan / OlinestaN / RiyaButler / DevenderYadav - Thanks!
@GWA - That is incredibly strange. The changes that are made effect files that don't deal with sound at all, in fact sound drivers aren't loaded until much later within the boot process!
@Redyam - It does not work on any screen with a native resolution less than 1024x768. It is on my todo list to find a way around that.
@John Marshall - It is not a question of design, but of how the installation process works. It is on my todo list to find a way to allow integration.
@kuijerlattie - It isn't because the image was too big. Internally the image is scaled to the proper size. That part is idiot proof. However on some computers changing the background image seems to cause issues. I still have to figure out why.
@OO.XX - You must have an "interesting" boot configuration. If you could please email me the output of "bcdedit /enum all" when run in an administrator command line, that would be great.
Worked flawlessly, thank you. But these files
bootmgr.exe
bootstr.dll
winload.exe
winload.exe.mui
winresume.exe
winresume.exe.mui
but these files
can integrate Windows 7 dvd ?
(google translate :( )
@ELohim - Sorry but integration will fail at the moment. I am working on this.
I wish you success Jeff Bush
@Jeff Yeah not sure what's going on there, but I've tried it twice. Both times, after running the program and changing the bootscreen and restarting the computer all the sound on my laptop is disabled. When I reset the computer to just before running the bootscreen program it fixes the sound.
hiya, i have a problem, i try to open the program but it just wont open at all....
i click on it and it doesnt show up, please help!
Hey, this used to work and no longer detects animations?
I have downloaded an activity.bmp that I have seen working before:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYZKRlkyc3k
from its creator and several other animation, and then when I click on animation, the animation finder popup occurs but it won't detect animations! Loading bootskins works though...
Infuriating! Please help and thanks for the otherwise great software!
Hi, was refered by a member on overclock.net
Wanting to get the win95 boot loader, or win98, to load onto win7.
I have a virtual machine of windows 98, and would like to know how I can pull it's boot screen, and put it into windows 7, as I technically have access to the original file.
If you could help, email me, and i'll work from there. Thanks so much
@GWA - I wish I could investigate it further, but I don't have access to an HP laptop.
@Ryan - Try running it with administrator control (it should request it on it's own). If that doesn't work email me the output of boot-info.
@Chrissyboy101 - It is looking for a folder. If the folder contains an "activity.bmp" file it uses it. Just select the folder that contains the file.
@RMLeLoup - The animations used in those Windows is very different than in Windows 7. The best bet is to probably use a screen capture tool to capture a video of the other OS booting in a VM. Then using some video editing software (Adobe Premiere for a nice interface or ffmpeg / SUPER since it is free) convert it to a series of PNGs.
Hey Jeff,
Just reporting back to say THANK YOU I LOVE YOU :D.
I must be getting dummer, because I managed it before, but never mind! :P
Jeff:
Thanks for Windows Boot Updater.
After a Windows Update, the Windows Boot Updater gives me the some errors when I try to modify my boot screen:
""The winload.exe.mui file could not be read as a PE file"
""The winresume.exe.mui file could not be read as a PE file"
And my Boot screen are now like Windows Vista.
What´s could be happened?
Windows 7 Professional SP 1 PT-BR
TIA,
NewTuxFan
Works (almost) perfect for me on windows 7 Ultimate x64

Wow thanks for this sir i will try this currently searching some tips for windows seven and i found this :) downloading it now feedback again after i try
is your WIM library source available for download?
thanks !
here if you don't have service packs:
copy your winload.exe and paste it everywhere except C:Windows/system32
download linux (suggest puppy linux) and make a disc
if there is a problem while starting windows follow this:
1. insert cd and boot it
2. if the desktop is shown mount the Windows File System
3. search for winload.exe
4. replace your winload.exe (the modified one)
thanks
boot updater is Nice software.

@Chrissyboy101, NewTuxFan, johnpaul, Eres, Dinesh, Naghibolla Babakhani - You're welcome!
@NewTuxFan - The ".mui" file problem has not yet been resolved. Please send me your winload.exe.mui and winresume.exe.mui files (in \Windows\System32\pt-BR\). Also send me the output of boot-info. To get the original back, use "Options > Restore files" in the program.
@ray123454321 - Creating installer error is known. Will be fixed in next release.
@ron - Yes, please email me, the email you provided looks fake. Most of the code is based on other sources. The main portion of it is just using the built-in Microsoft WIM library and I copied a lot from the examples in the help file. For the dedicated quick-read functions I followed the WIM File Format. For decompression in the quick-read functions the LZX was inspired by 7zip and XPRESS from psuedo-code by Microsoft.
@Eres - Why wouldn't that work with service packs? Also, the program automatically copies winload.exe to winload~1.exe upon modification (winload~1.exe is always the original, further modifications make new files like winload~2.exe, etc). As described above, the Windows 7 Install or Recovery disk can be used, but Linux is another option. Thanks.
@Super Flo - I understand that you are getting an error, but I have no idea what you are saying. Please email me with more details.
Worked for me, cool.
I've an error on my Windows 7 Professional x64:
"Failed to disable security for bootmgr.exe".
But I don't find any bootmgr.exe file, even in the hidden partition...
I can't open the program:

(Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 Dutch - just installed)
This is THE THING! and you guys rock! Thanks a lot guys!
@Ilia, Vincent - Thanks!
@Springs, cobje - To help me fix the problems please email me the output of boot-info and your bootmgr file. If your bootmgr is on the hidden system drive, you can use OpenHiddenSystemDrive to get it. You also have to show hidden files and protected system files. On the filesystem it is just called "bootmgr" (bootmgr.exe is a 'file' within bootmgr).
Hi!
Got a nice feature you can add: Static background without an animation while booting. I got a way around using your program using this way: I set the ANIMATION to static image and use this transparent gif ( http://www.pharmacyhosting.com/media/810/transparent.gif ---- got it on google, no permission asked for using it :P ) and then set to complete mode with the background img with 1024x768 res.
This is nice for ppl who are building CarPC/Carputers so their build looks `OEM`.... I think you could add it like a checkbox called "Transparent animation" or "Static Background Only-Mode".
Also, when loading your app I got a german text saying something about EFI boot.... last time I tried your app I was using BIOS boot.... now I am using EFI boot.... Is it an issue you are aware of?
Thank you again for your app!
Also, if you could look after this EFI/UEFI boot stuff...
EFI/UEFI is getting more and more commonly used.... it`s great to have cold boot to windows in 15 seconds using EFI/UEFI along an average SSD.
Hi,
I have a dual boot system, both Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 Dutch. The only difference is the architecture (x86 and x68_64). The boot files are located at the x86 partition, so I'll post both outputs:
http://www.mediafire.com/?pgphtbt5awab9k1
http://www.mediafire.com/?rsrc4ne9b937n3d
And here's the bootmgr file (from the x86 partition):
http://www.mediafire.com/?s64mgcje49dtxe4
BTW, I had to start the program "boot-info" a number of times. It didn't worked immediately.
Awesome program hats off very easy to use and works great.
Was just wonder if their where plans for a feature that would allow you to control and customize the loop back for animation .gif. Hope I'm making since.
@Gustavo Oliveira
Yes, this issue has come up before, and using a single pixel transparent image works great. The reason I haven't added this feature directly in the program is because I don't want people to think the animation is actually being removed. However calling it "transparent animation" would be appropriate.
The EFI thing is under my Todo list above. For me to get working on that you should encourage the VirtualBox group to get EFI support for Windows working. See http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/7702. Once that works I can start investigating and testing.
@cobje - I will start looking into. Thanks!
@Daniel -Thanks! I am working on that. Currently that isn't even possible without opening large security holes on the machine. Also, the animation is NOT a gif, it is much different and actually has full color support.
Win7BootUpdater.exe works as it says on the box for Windows Thin PC 32-bit - so you should be able to add Windows Embedded Standard 7 x86 as a supported OS version. I'll check it out on 64-bit WES7 later.
Cheers! and thanx!
I just wanted to say that I have been looking for a program that does this kind of thing and this is very user firendly and most importantly, doesn't destroy my operating system.
Props to you
im having problems everytime i try it. doesnt work im running window7 home premium 64bit
i always end up in start up repair. any help? thanks
Man! Just change this shit hosting!!!!!!
Portuguese... Brazil.
Whenever i try to apply a bootscreen i get an error saying "There was an uncaught exception while updating these files: System.AccessViolationException...etc". Ive tried taking onwership of the files it changes but i'm still getting this error.
@Jonathan, Fafhrd, Chaos - Thanks!
@Fafhrd - I tested this awhile back, in both WES7 32 and 64-bit and I found out it worked. I was imagining that WES7 was really just an "edition" of Windows 7. Thanks though!
@ema - This is a known problem for some computers, to help me diagnose it please email me the output of output of boot-info and your bootmgr file.
@hacker - What's wrong with it? I know sometimes it is a bit slow, but I never expected to be getting 35,000 pageviews a day... one day I may upgrade, but I don't have the money right now, why don't you donate?
@Chaos - I am glad you read! Hopefully soon I will release the next version.
@Timothy - This is an interesting problem. Please send me the complete error. The program has built-in take ownership system, so that is not the issue. This may be a file in-use problem, but I don't even know what file it is choking on!
Thanks dude. This works just great. I have customized and created my own version of Win7 and until now had trouble with the custom boot screen in the windows setup. Thanks to you my custom build Win7 is now complete.
hola buenas noches hice lo que me indica el programa paro no me funciona tengo una dell netbok 1080 10' starter pero la formatee y es SO windows 7 ultimate pero no aplica la funcion que le di m pueden explicara aque se debe?
Can i change the background from a color to an image? and what are the specs ofthe default windows animation and where can i download the default image sequence for windows 7? Thanks for all the work!
@Dark Viper - Thanks!
@martin salazar - Some computers do not work yet. I am trying to figure out why.
@DougM - In the program choose the "Complete" method instead of the "Simple" method. The specs and the original images are on this page, under #TheAnimation and #Download respectively.
I can't get the bootupdater to even start it just crashes on my main machine but on my laptop it works great. I think it may be a driver conflict anyway here is the report. Also my main machine is a fresh install of Win 7 64

i tried to execute but not showing any thing. Any idea wat to do/ tweaks required..
@Snacknap - Thanks for the information. I will try to make it work even if dual booting in the next version.
@joe - Some computers just don't work yet. To help me figure out to make the next version better, please email me the output of boot-info and your winload.exe file.
@+DS_DV+ - This is strange. Does it crash even on the Grayscale animation given above? Can you email me the full output of the crash report? Can you send me an animation you are trying to use? Thanks.
@Radu, nikhil579, Souri - This is strange and possibly due to an "interesting" boot setup. Please email me the output of boot-info.
Great program.Works like a charm.
Thanks
hey.
you should help me figure out how to get this to work on a 1024 x 600 res. cuz im sure there has to be a way to at least change the boot res to match this program.
Great work!! I know how hard and delicate it is.. Thanks for the effort.. and for making it open sourced.. The next step is upto designers.. to make the animations.. Thank You!
@Mak, Isuru - Thanks!
@leo - I was investigating this a bit and haven't found a solution yet (although I haven't tried very hard yet). However if you would like to help, you should start looking through the decompressed bootmgr.exe and winload.exe with IDA, looking for functions that use the word "Resolution".
@Isuru - There are tons of animations out there, just search for them. I am very slowly getting the boot-skin sharing system up.
That's just UBER cool...!!!
Increase my per PC sale by 1K...!!!!
Hey, I also get this "Failed to disable security for bootmgr.exe" error, even after restoring backups first.
Thanks for all your hard work though :)
@Ron Stoppable - I am glad you like it, however you must note that this program cannot be used for commercial purposes and if you intend to use it in that fashion you must contact me.
@soadroxs - Please email me the output of boot-info so I can look into the problem.
Hello, Im getting APPCRASH everytime i run the program. Even CMD version crashing for me... Whats wrong there? Im on 64bit W7 Enterprise.

hey grate tool buddy....
works perfectly.......
searching from long time for this tool
thanx a lot..........
Used this program to change my desktop's startup animation to this: http://capt-nemo.deviantart.com/#/d3hep9q
Did everything I was supposed to do, according to the readme that came with that .zip file, and then applied the changes. When I restarted the computer to see how it all looked, I got this after the BIOS screen:
"BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system will not boot."
Everything I saw on Google mentioned a repair disc or System Recovery, but I do not have a repair disc for 7, and I cannot access System Recovery or Command Prompt, only the System Menu. I've got a lot of stuff on that desktop I don't want to lose, so I'm hoping there's a way to fix this without resetting to factory specs. The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I don't know if you need any more info, but I'll provide whatever else I can if requested.
@Ritzz - Thanks!
@morph - This has been happening on a few computers, however your APPCRASH actually happened while in my program (as opposed to kernelbase.dll). I will have to look at why this may be. In the mean time, can you email me the output of boot-info. Thanks. Also, do you have any "interesting" boot setups (e.g. dual boot or alternate boot manager?)
@Brady Allan - Currently this program doesn't work on all computers (I estimate about 5% don't work). For detailed instructions see this page. You will need a System Repair Disc, but you can download it and if you don't have a CD burner than you can even put it on a Flash drive. All instructions are provided. Once you get your computer back, please send me the output of boot-info and your bootmgr file so I can make the program work better in the future.
Hey guys I created a ROG Bootscreen.
A preview is availabe here: Windows 7 ROG RAMPAGE 64-Bit (SP1) Bootscreen
Full link: http://www.tweakscene.com/viewtopic.php?p=18347#p18347
You can also find all the bootscreen animation in our forum.
Thanks Jeff
hello,
I am running a Windows 7 Home Premium (was originally Windows 7 Starter), and I need some help.
when I startup my computer, I don't see the boot screen. it just goes straight to the log in screen. is there a possible way for a has been Windows 7 Starter to show the boot screen?
thanks.
hey i love this tool it works a charm except for one problem .. when i change the text it will only stay during that first boot .. then windpws will change text back to original.. lucky animation stays which is what i really wanted so thanks :D
@neuropass - Thanks!
@Joshua - It doesn't work on some systems yet. Please email me the output of boot-info.
@TAJNOST - That's a very interesting problem that I haven't heard of before. Please email me the output of boot-info and your winload.exe(.mui) files before and after the text reverts.
After I download it, I can't even run the program, once I run, it says win 7 boot updater has stopped working
My os is win 7 pro 64 bit
I also got appcrash error whenever i open the cmd or the gui version http://www.mediafire.com/?hysoj8vzr0gbvvv
++My os configuration is quite...sick
This prog is the shit Thanx buddy.
boot screen updater not working in my system my screen resolution is 1440 x 900 so is there any fixed for me!! please help me to run this lil apps in my system
@RustCrew - Thanks
@deepankar barman - The only time resolution matters if it is less than 1024x768. See below.
@colinkkkk, chengsiong, deepankar barman - Please email me the output of boot-info along with a description of the problem and any information you have (e.g. if you dual-boot).
I was watching a You Tube Video. It stated to make sure a 64 bit exe was donwloaded if that was the OS used. I came here but noted there was none.
Is it safe to conclude it now operates on both 32
Unfortunately it did not work for me. The app kept flashing with me just trying to open a folder to some I wanted to view.
I noted others were also having programs -- could you please post why we may be incurring problems?
@MYSTIQUEOFINDY
The 32-bit version supports both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7. This was true even before I stopped releasing the 64-bit version. The only downside is that you cannot browse to inside the correct system32 folder in the program on 64-bit Windows.
I don't understand the problem you describe. Please email me with more information.
i have win7 x64 ultimate{6.1.7600] without SP1, after set boot screen (succesfully) , and the restart of computer i get black screen and restart (boot-info-64 dont work on my computer, i have it in process but nothing more),

Great Work Thaimin,
Nevertheless there is an issue with files after WU dated August 24 or 25.
It seems that winload and winresume have been updated !
Here are files from Server R2 :
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1328082/Windows_Original_Files_after_WU%20-%2024-08-11.rar
But still TY for this great tool.
Regards,
N :)
@Johny - Sorry it's not working for you. Please email the output of "bcdedit /enum all" in an administrator command window. It will have more info. Also your bootmgr and winload.exe file will be useful.
@Neige - The version of the files you uploaded match those after updating with KB2506014 which came out on April 12. I already include patching for those files. So I think your problem is something else. Please send me the output of boot-info.
TY for taking a look at this.
Basically what happens is that when you try to mod copyright info (remove m$ one) on winload and winresume with some other info, the program stops and explains that it can't do it due to a recent file mod with WU. But if you just replace "Starting Windows" with something else and leave m$ copyright then it's ok.
Here requested info : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1328082/requested_info.rar
The funny thing about this update is how come it was only updated a couple of days ago on R2 editions. I double checked it with other R2 versions that I use for testing custom releases and it's the same. The update only applied some days ago.
In anyway, i would like to thank you for taking a look at all this.
Regards,
N :)

@Neige - I haven't done any tests with Server 2008 R2 so I don't know whats going on. It is odd that the same version number for files in Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 were released at different times. I will check the files later to make sure that they are actually the same files. Please keep the files on Dropbox.
@Juan - If you need to help fixing your computer see Restoring Winload Manually. Once your computer is working again, please send me the output of boot-info along with your bootmgr and winload.exe files.
@iWizkids - This feature is not made yet.
Hello there Mr. J Bush
I have been visiting your website from time to time, and i have NOT noticed anything new - regarding "Boot Updater". Is the project active?
or have you halted any development of it ?
BTW, i'm running Win7 Ultimate, have used the last updated version of your utility v0 Beta 1 (v0.0.1.1) - it works well, have had no problems.
The preview works OK. Couple of 'bells' and whistles' would be welcome.
Thanks
p.s.
The only annoying glitch was app. crash when making the self installer/patch. Any idea why.
@ Jeff
No worries, I'll keep the files in Dropbox. Should you need intensive testing on R2 let me know, I'll be happy to test whatever you need. I only deal with R2 and not W7 as I belong to the 4 Horsemen Team and we are very active over here : http://www.win2008workstation.com/forum/index.php
Regards,
Neige :)
@Henry Vee
The development of the project is currently on hold. I have been very busy and will continue to be very busy for another month or so. I do plan on getting back to this project to tie up some loose ends, but not right now. The current version does crash on creating an intsaller, but I have a version with that fixed.
@Neige
Thanks!
This is F****** good, simply crazy :) :)
I tried to create some bootscreens with this, and it works great!
Let me give you guys a funny one: http://www.mediafire.com/?7n5hc6p3az8lsxh
very nice work!!
but i could not get it to work due a windows update
can u solve this?
i cannot uninstall the update.l
I think there is a problem with the beta, when i create text for the bootscreen it doesnt show up on bootup just the animation is showing up!
Specs
Packard Bell imedia X2415
Your program is great, exactly what i needed to make custom boot screens for my htpc's! Only issue i have is the program crashes everytime i try to create an installer. I've tried on 3 different computers all running win7 ultimate 64, all crash. not really a big deal, everything else works great, it would just be nice to automate this in my installer.
@Antony - Why do you think it is due to a Windows Update? What specific file is the issue (bootmgr, winload.exe, winresume.exe, ...). Please email with the output of boot-info and the problematic file. Thanks.
@Dean - Some other people have reported this issue, but it only seems to effect some people. Email me the output of boot-info and your winload.exe file.
@TheLohr - The create installer is a known issue and a fix will be released soon.
Hi Jeff i would like if someone that can give the step by step process of changing the boot screen of vista and windows7 i have already downloaded the windows7 updater but i need the procedures so i want to know how i can convert and make my own book skin
@michael - This program does not work for Vista. Also, the program is fairly intuitive on its own, otherwise there are numerous YouTube videos and other websites with detailed instructions. One example is http://www.askvg.com/change-windows-7-boot-screen-using-windows-7-boot-updater/.
Hi ! I have an big problem : Anytime I try to boot after applying ANY NEW BOOTSCREEN the first 2 boots link to the windows repair utility . I scrolled down to the end of the " technical data " and it said that the boot manager could not find the boot loading file . Any next attempt to boot my PC without patching it before makes it use the Vista bootscreen . I can restore an backup and it uses the english Language for it with normal screen . Any next attempt of patching ends with this .
Can you please help me ? Please email me when you found an fix ! Thanks !
Angel
Ok , I started my PC with the drive boot ( not C:\ ) and it told me winloader.exe or so - it's signature is not trusted ... I had this type of error NEVER before ... I gonna use EasyBCD and play around with it a little more
\windows\system32\winload.exe
0xc0000428
The digital signature of this file could not be checked ... why ? Is it Windows 7 sp1 compatible ?
I have a mid 2008 apple imac running windows 7 via bootcamp. Do you know if this program will still work?
Thanks :D
I made two skins.... Windows ME and BSOD. Enjoy. I really made my friends angry with these!! http://bit.ly/rpZynu
I am having an issue with GIF.. I have the appropriate size 200x200 and the gif is animated fine if I view it with a browser. But when inserted within the boot customization program, it just sits still.. Any ideas?
@AngelDE98 - It is SP1 compatible, however on some computers it just doesn't work and I am trying to figure it out. Please email me the output of boot-info along with your bootmgr and winload files. Thanks.
@Muha - There have been problems with dual-booting using bootcamp, however there have been a few successes. Overall about 5% of computers fail but for dual-booting computers it is more like 75% fail. Try it, but make sure you can recover in case of emergency by look at the Troubleshooting section first.
@SILVERMANIE - Awesome!
@Johhnyfive - Animated GIFs do not work. You must break them up into individual images (like PNG). I recommend using the free Jasc Animation Shop (above, with link and instructions).
actually it works well, but I got a little strange thing. I just load apple bootscreen, it works but the color is different, it means that it just change the animation. not the background.
thx b4 for this cool app.
i need to convert images to bs7 coz im using win7bootcmd!!! im making a program which uses ur win7bootcmd... please tell me a way to convert images to bs7???
I see that you patched bootmgr to ignore the lack of a digital signature on winload.exe. I've installed windows 8 developer preview and it has an updated bootmgr, and fails to boot the modified winload.exe when I'm trying to boot windows 7. Could you prehaps look into applying your bootmgr patch to the win 8 bootmgr? I could send you the win 8 bootmgr if you don't want to install windows 8.
@Jeff Bush - I had a better idea... I used your Win7Boot program and made the BSOD. Then I changed my log-in splash screen (using another program) to a full screen image of the Win ME boot up logo.
So, now it looks like my new i7 rig BSODs on boot, then switches to ME, then goes right to an Win7 desktop. Great time. THANKS!!!
Also, my one friend put Win7 on his new Macbook Pro and changed the boot up to the Apple/Win colored apple... looks awesome. He also made a vinyl sticker so the glowing apple on the back of the screen has the windows colors. RADICAL. Thanks again.
Works well. I am interested in being able to apply changes to boot.wim insteas of having to manually copy the patched files into my Win7_PE build. Also any chance of adding a feature to replace the "Windows is loading files ..." text?
Very great tool you have created. Thank you sincerely for the command line version. Working amazing for me so far.
what files does it edit? The app crashes and my GUI boot is just like the VISTA boot screen. (with the bar and green loading animation). please help me, what shoould i do?
bro can u fix problem resolution
1024 x 600 ty.
@kyubok - Background images don't seem to always apply. Can you email me the output of boot-info along with your winload.exe file? Thanks.
@VasanR - See the file format description on the extras page. The BS7 file contains the necessary PNG files along with an XML file for all the other settings.
@niobium93 - I have begun studying the Windows 8 bootmgr already. It uses a different compression scheme which I have been able to decompress so far, but not recompress.
@SILVERMANIA - Awesome!
@Shvontz - Currently when you try to apply to boot.wim or install.wim Windows will fail to install... the one way around it is to use the command-line version during first boot-up (e.g. SetupComplete.cmd).
@Odinlives - Thanks!
@david - It edits all files listed in the program: bootmgr, winload.exe, winresume.exe, winload.exe.mui, and winresume.exe.mui. The bootmgr is at the root of a partition. The EXEs are in \Windows\sytem32 and the MUIs are in \Windows\sytem32\LANG where LANG is your language code, such as en-US, de-DE, ...
@jawes - No one has found a solution for this yet. I have tried looking but haven't found a way to make it work.
hi again. when i use the boot updater with a .bs7 file. I restart then my pc went straight to STARTUP RECOVERY? why is this happening? and after the recovery finishes, my boot screen looks like the VISTA loading screen. please help
I keep getting this error with trying to update to any boot animation.

Hey guys,
Some new Boot-screens are available here:
http://tweakscene.com/viewforum.php?f=106
We also opened a new section where you can request a bootscreen. Enjoy.
This wont start on my Win7 Ultimate 64-bit..
Also if I run it as admin or with other compatibility..
lol thanks for removing my last message. btw solved.
@david - Some computers just don't work. I am trying to figure out why. Get get back the original animation, start Windows7BootUpdater and use "Options > Restore Backups" until it says no backups were restored.
@anthony - It looks like you have the Windows 8 bootmgr on your computer, which is currently incompatible.
@Neuropass - Thanks!
@Luca - What was the problem and how did you solve it? Posts aren't usually deleted from here, but I don't always approve them right away (I try to do it about once a week).

the problem started ever since I installed win 8. Anyway I uninstalled both 7 and 8, but still get the same error. Although when I reinstalled win 7, I happened to have dual win 7 boot screen.. but I deleted one of the win 7 listing in the boot.ini to boot directly into win 7.
Love your program! been checking for an update since may!
how do I use the parameters of bootres? please an example.
as you can with the folders and 105 images?
I no longer look there.
Thanks in advance
i saw what with my Win7 x64 only works 0.0.0.8v, so can someone create some Windows 8 animations, which works with 0.0.0.8?
just installed a new windows 7 on my pc.
No i can''t get bootupdate to work.
The program doesn't start. (admin rights)

i really don''t now what is wrong.
the program worked fine on my other system.
I have a image 200 by 21000, so each time it adds 200 on and goes down to the next picture. but instead it just puts the entire image re-sized and uses the same distorted image on ever frame. It makes the 21000 into 200. (hope this makes sense)
Wait my stupid fault i selected static image instead of animation... Face palm!!!
I have the exact same error as anthony. I DID have windows 8 installed on the same hard drive at one point, is it possible to remove the windows 8 from the bootmgr at all so that I can finally make the program work?
Hi Jeff,
Not sure if it is just me but I have tried a few things and it seems that the download link for the win7boot.exe is opening the HTML page instead. All of the other links seem to be working fine.
@Joe, gunny0 - These errors are most likely the result of a current or PREVIOUS Windows 8 installation. Windows 8 changes portions of the hard drive outside of the its partition (and sometimes not even on the same hard drive). I am working on a solution to this.
@MorbiDom - I have no idea what you are asking.
@zydrius32 - Please send me the output of boot-info and tell me of any special boot setups (dual-booting, Windows 8 installations). On the other hand, you can extract the animation directly from BS7 files which is compatible with Alpha 8. Look at the file format.
@Ninjacow18 - Glad you fixed your own problem!
@Brian - You may be able to replace the Windows 8 bootmgr with the Windows 7 one, however it is a risky process and I haven't tried it.
@Thommo - My site is protected against hot-linking. When another site links to my downloads, it instead gives you the webpage. However if you use this site you should be able to use the link just fine. If you cannot then please tell me.
Is there any way to use the commandline version for patching with a predefined directory with screens inside? I mean is there any way possible to patch silent with no GUI (unattended).
Anyway if their isn't a silent way (maybe in future), this is a great program, keep on going with your work....it's appreciated anyway!!!!
Greatings Mark.
thnx jeff, looking forward to see a solution!
awsome worked just fine i have windows 7 ultimate
only thing is its slow starting up but really i cant complain it didnt mess anything up so great job on the program you made

Hello, first I would like to say bravo and well done this programs it amazing. I have a very small issue though, is there a way to change the loop time from 3 sec to an even number. I only ask because the animation I use is a horizontal shine effect that moves back and forth over an image. The problem I have is in that 3 second period it goes left, right, and then left -loops- and starts with the left again. So it jumps back to the other side and I am trying to make it look as seamless as possible. Again, amazing program and thanks.
Hi Jeff,
i dont understand why i can't download W7 Boot Updater
i run w7 64bit ie8
Thanks a lot
Mig
It's not work on my comp, when I double clicks on the .exe, nothin' happen (no app reveal)...
I run on W7 Ultimate SP1 x86...
sorry for poor english...
update :
I have try the cmd version, look like all done perfectly, but when I reboot, nothin' change...
for info :
I use ubuntu (multiboot by grub), also. but i think that's not affect the 7 boot screen...
@Mark - The command line version can only use BS7 files which you could make ahead of time. The BS7 file contains all the information needed (text, images, ...). The installer (once working) will also have a silent mode.
@holyhell111 - The startup should be no slow unless you use a background image (it takes time to load and draw the background image). Otherwise it actually creates a faster bootup (by a few milliseconds).
@Bobscanner101 - This is a future feature I hope to add.
@Miguel - There was a lot of load on my site earlier this week, and that was probably the issue. Please try again.
@bobman, Urai Fadillah - See my comments above, this is already been addressed.
@Urai Fadillah - Dual boot messes a lot of things up with my program.
Are u creating new version?
ey bro what about being able to change the resolution , any progress on that?
that would give it the final touch, peace
Well, every time I install a new boot I get the following error (mage BOOTMGR is corrupt. The system can not boot)
solution which is the boot order to have the installed and not leave this mistake?
thank you!
pls make the update for 64bit SP 1...thank u
@zydrius32 - Yes, but it is taking a long time since I have so little free time.
@itsa me mario - No progress, sorry.
@karlos - Some computers do not work and I don't know why. Please email me the output of boot-info.
@1312 - It does work for x64 SP1. See the response above for karlos.
but i trust youre working on it? xD
Hey
very nice program you got there, but i have problem. i used it once and had to restore my pc after a issue (not by BootUpdater) The problem is after the systemrestore BootUpdater doest run at all
tried cleaning registry for bootupdater, didnt help. it wasnt mutch entries anyway.
hope you got the answer
@itsa me mario - I work on it when I have time, which at the moment means no. I am super busy with work.
@TheHaso - Interesting. This could be my first real lead into some of the problems people have using the program. Please email me the output of boot-info
Hello the program works great, But for some reason the loop does not work, it loads the image all the way up to the loop, but the loop does nothing.
when im opening the file nothing happens? what's the problem i did so many things yet i can't still open the file
@jimno - My guess is that you don't have enough frames (need 105). Otherwise I don't know what to say without more information.
@jay26 - When you try to run the Windows7BootUpdater.exe nothing happens? This may be due to some minor problem with your computer. Please email me the output of boot-info.
Hi there,
I tried using this application however, when I apply a new boot screen , it keeps showing the error stating that it is unable to capture WIM. Could you help me with this?
@Luke - You are the second person to report that error. It is possible that you don't have the WIM library installed (which is usually only possible with WES7). See this page on installing the WIM library. If it still doesn't work, email me the problem and the output of boot-info.
thanks for your creation,i mange to to create bootskin and some how im satisfy with it,i have save my bootskin, but i want to create installer but when ever i try to create bootskin installer, the program crash,so please you kind tell me how to create bootskin installer
Hi do you think you can make it work with win developer preview, because i tried it and the app keeps crashing.
@dragon - That feature is currently broken. Will be fixed.
@Suhaib - I have started looking at the Windows 8 files, starting with the bootmgr file since that effects Windows 7 as well.
Thank's a lot !! The application works perfectly on my computer. I run Windows 7 pro 64 bits and there was no issues. You are amazing !! I have created my own pictures animation of 105 frames without background and it works too !
Can 'u extract pictures from this file (http://www.2shared.com/file/6iJtkBDY/Windows_8_concept.html) and upload, because, as I said before, only older 'ur program's version works for my PC.
thanks for the aplication
I can't change the text "Starting Windows" in Windows RE/PE Image but the bottom text did change.. What will I do sir?
@Panch, gundam_g - You are welcome!
@zydrius32 - You can do this yourself with any hex editor. The file format is pretty straight forward. The PNG files are stored raw in the file and shortly before each on is a line saying "Content-type: image/png". You can see more information here
@Mary Athena - Currently modifying the install disk is not supported.
Hi everybody!
Great program! But I cant made install.EXE on it. It simply crashes.... What can be wrong with it???
thanks for the fun code. i made a bootskin for myself and thought to share. here is the url.
http://glassbala.com/peaceleaf/peaceleaf.html
peace out
Can u give me the program name, which extracts .BS7 files?
@Bohdan - Thanks! The install.exe making feature has a bug in it. Next release will fix it.
@drew - Thanks!
@zydrius32 - There is no program. As I said before you need to do it yourself using any hex editor.
It's Too hard for me to use hex editor (tried "Freeware Hex Editor XVI32" ) , please, can u extract pictures? (Better would be if 'ur new program's version will have .BS7 extract function. )
Love the program, just wondering if you could add a feature in the future to allow selection of a digital certificate to sign the new files with. Not a huge necessity, but it'd be nice. Also, could you make the program load the actual current messages like it does the icon, rather than default "Starting Windows/© Microsoft Corporation"? Thank you!
when i go to download this program nothing happens. Iv got it to download before but this time like i said nothing happens. Any suggestions. please email me at pilotboy318@hotmail.com
thanks
Hi Jeff,
Thanks so much for your work here - it's a nice program. However I have a slight problem - I can't change the animation at all.
The text works - changes just fine, but I've tried with bmps, pngs, and jpgs... all that happens in the program is a blank space where the animation would normally play. I applied it anyhow to see if it was just a display glitch, but the output was identical (text changed, no animation at all).
Any thoughts? I could email you the files. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64bit if that helps.
Hey jeff I am trying to change boot animation with commandline version of your application and I am getting "Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application" ".NET Framework Initialization error. I have already tried this
<startup>
<supportedRuntime version="v4.0.30319">
</startup>
copied this text on a notepade and save it as "Win7BootUpdaterCmd.exe.config" but that is also not working, now I get "This application as failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." message.
Please help me out brother.
I have tried but win7BootUpdater is not being installed in my system. My win7 is 32 bit and it's ultimate.
If any body has solution please mail me.
thanks.
Hi Jeff but this version run under window7 starter or what can i do for Thanks a Lot Happy New year
Thank you for this great tool!!! I have already changed my boot screen once with this but I now have a larger project in mind and I need help. I am having issues converting an .avi file to .bs7 file. I have tried using the video2png program you suggested... Either it does not work or I'm doing something wrong (I choose the latter). Thank you for you time and programs....
Actually when will you release the new version >.
Hi i use this before and i must say its great but when i reinstall my windows 7 and i download it , then run it , its not working its says error
can you help me !
@Andrew Sachen - The files are not signed in the current version. In the current version the "Starting Windows" text is loaded from the current files and in the next version "© Microsoft Corporation" will also be supported along with all the current colors, text size/positions, etc.
@matt - I don't know what to say, try to download again?
@Gregory - Are you selecting a folder that contains 105 200x200 images?
@nice_guy75 - As we talked about via email, some folder paths seem to cause problems.
@Ram - I need more information than that to help you. What is not working?
@araldo - It should run under Starter but I have not been able to test. I know that many Starter editions are on netbooks which have displays less than 1024x768 which is not supported.
@niteNarmor - I have uploaded a slightly fixed version of video2png which may help.
@Peter23q - Hopefully soon. In the last month I have made some great progress on writing an XPRESS compressor (necessary to fix the Windows 8 bootmgr problem) and the boot skin sharing system (will open up to a few individuals in the coming weeks then to everyone).
@alecquay - What error?
@Jeff - Yup! 0000 indexed to 0104, I've tried JPGs, PNGs, BMPs nothing is working. Blank animation.
Like I said - I can email you the files if you want.
Note - this is the x64 Ultimate edition on a SSD. Not sure if that should make any difference though... given that it seems to have a problem loading the images.
Its works! with no problem. The first thing i did was I re install my Windows 7 Ultimate without any updates except its been activated online. Then I run Win7BootUpdater.exe and made some changes on Messages like (c) Microsoft Corporation into "Owned by Phrozen" and click Apply button, and viola it works and successful without any problem at all. Then I restarted to make sure it works. Then lo and behold it works.
The best way is to apply this boot updater before any tweaking softwares modifies the winload.exe, winresume.exe and bootmgr.
hi i'm yudhis , and i have problem that my Win7Boot has stopped working.......
here's the problem
it seems that i'll no longer be able to change my bootscreen anymore
:-(

heard there was a plan of getting native resolution to work? instead of just 1024x786 for the bootscreen?
that would be awesome!
keep up the epic work your doing jeff
It works great! Awesome software :) No errors at all :D
Hello.
I'm having difficulties with w7bu.
Before it was working, but from now on it crashing on start.
I think it happening because w7 boot screen changed to vista boot screen, I dont't know why, and I have to change it to original w7 first.
Searching internet over this issue, with no luck.
So can you help?
Hello. I am testing the application, and is wonderful. But i founded only an error.
When i intended to create an installation package, the application crashed.
Regards.
@Gregory - Email me the files and I will check them out.
@phrozen - Thanks for your suggestion.
@Yudh56 - Have you installed Windows 8 on this computer ever? Otherwise see my suggestion for @wing.
@deathnote - There were/are plans, however no progress has been made on figuring out how to get around the limitation.
@Daniel - Thanks!
@wing - You need to restore the backups "manually". You need to copy file~1 to file and delete all other ~ files. The files you need to restore are bootmgr (either on the hidden partition or C:\), \Windows\System32\winload.exe, winresume.exe, \Windows\System32\LANG\winload.exe.mui, and winresume.exe.mui where LANG is your language code (like en-US).
@martin - This is a known error and will be fixed in the next version.
shame.. u deleting my messages
Hi, everytime i attempt to run the program even as admin, it doesn't start. I tried the command prompt version but i couldn't get it to run due to windows says there's an error and it closes it. Is there anything to fix this?
Win 7 Home Premium SP1
Thanks for reply.
There is no ~1 files on hidden partition, because I've deleted them, when was trying to resolve problem with old boot screen.
Also bootrec from command line couldn't fix issue with vista boot screen.
Is there a way to restore original boot screen from W7 boot DVD?
hi Jeff ! first i want to thank u for the cool app...i have a problem though, its not working for me... i managed to open it but it says it could not read or verify these two files "winload.exe.mui' and "winresume.exe.mui". i have tried to find them using "select windows folder" but when i open the "system32" folder it won't show me the "boot" folder so i cant choose these files... im running the 64bit version of win7... so i have tried to locate these files on my computer and mooving them to the directory that the "winbootupdater" can find them and it seems to be ok, i could aplly my animation and it said it OK but now when i restart my p.c theres no animation at all, not the new one and not the old one...my computer seems to work fine but i really want to fix this problem and change the boot animation...oh i forgot to mention im using the Hebrew version of win 7... if u could help it would be great!!!
tnx
jacko
@... - I don't usually delete messages unless them look like spam, and since your name is "..." I can't even tell what message you are referring to.
@Juan - Please EMAIL me the output of boot-info.
@wing - There is a backup of all the boot files at \Windows\Boot\PCAT, you can copy them from there.
@jacko - Those files should be located in \Windows\System32\he\ I believe. However, you may have found the issue - maybe 2-letter character codes don't work in my program! What folder are they located in? The ability to look for files with a file dialog is limited with 64-bit since Windows magically makes the directory \Windows\SysWOW64\ look like \Windows\System32\, however internally within my program I make up for it (but I cannot change the file dialog).
I keep getting the Error anthony also posted here. You told him it was because of windows 8 bootmgr. The problem is I don't have that. I did have windows 8 in multiboot, but i recently uninstalled it and used the windows 7 cd for fixmbr to restore everything, or is that nog everything? :s
This is the error:

Hello guys. I'm download it but it doesn't work. I have netbook ASUS Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit please help me.
@Vincent Vandyck - The Windows 8 bootmgr stays around even after you erase the Windows 8 partition since it is on a small hidden partition. Fixmbr just changes the master boot record and not the bootmgr (which is a normal file). The basic idea of getting the Windows 7 bootmgr back is to copy the contents of \Windows\Boot\PCAT to the hidden partition.
@Jakub Arbet - I need more information. In what way does it not work? Please EMAIL me.
Thx for the help, but it can't seem to do it :s I'm probably doing something stupid but: I've copied the contents from \Windows\Boot\PCAT but when I try to paste it in the hidden partition it doesn't do anything :s
I get no error or anything, it just does nothing and the hidden partition looks empty (I have set hidden files and folders to be visible).
BTW, I have an Acer laptop, don't know if that's relevant.
Ok, sorry, it didn't show hidden system files yet, so now I do see the contents. I still can't copy though :s It just doesn't do anything when I paste.
The folders in the "SYSTEM RESERVERD" partition are "Boot" (which seems to have the same content as the "PCAT" folder and "System Volume Information"
Then there's a file "BOOTNXT", a file "BOOTSECT.BAK" and then there's a lot of bootmanger files, it goes from "bootmgr" to "bootmgr~12"
Amazing stuff! Thanks!
Will there be a version where also the shutdown screen and messages can be set up?
hello jeff bush. I download it and it doesn't work iat my netbook. In the Task Manager are action with name Win7BootUpdater.exe but it close it. I'm not see any window whit this program.
Hello, I´ve started running some tests with the application, so far it works well, no bigger errors.
how can i copy the contents of \Windows\Boot\PCAT to the hidden partition?
@Vincent Vandyck - The ~1 through ~12 are the backups made by my program. bootmgr~1 is the original file, so you could just delete bootmgr~2 through bootmgr~12 and boormgr and rename bootmgr~1 to bootmgr.
@Vince - The shutdown screen is the same as the logon screen for which numerous programs exist and is simply replacing an image file.
@Jakub Arbet - Please EMAIL me the output of boot-info along with the description you give above and tell me if you have or had any special boot setups (dual boot, Windows 8, ...).
@Karsten - Thanks!
@jay26 - Copying those files may require copying single files at a time. For some reason the hidden partition does not like being copied to with many files at a time.
so how can i copy file at a time on hidden partition?
It works! Thank you so much for the awesome app and your time! :D
@jay26 - Select one file, CTRL+C, CTRL+V?
@Vincent Vandyck - You're welcome!
Hello,
The Boot screen changer is working normally in my Desktop, but its not working on my laptop, i think you are the only one who can solve it. I am using Compaq 420. Please give me a solution. I am dying to use it on my Laptop. And the program is really really cool. Well done , waiting for your reply.
ahh ..i want to know how can i access the hidden partition
Hey bro, I still got Failed to capture WIM in one of my OS, it is Windows 7 Enterprise edition,
I am able to change the text, but I failed even follow your instruction about install the library,
it appears that I have already got the wimgapi.dll, and after I replace it..
it still does not work for me..
Is there a way to solve the problem? Thank you :)
hi jeff in reference to our reply 2/1/2012 yes its a netbook but the graphic card support the resolution (intel graphics media accelerator 3150) furthermore i have a error when i try upload the a skin. what can i check ? Thanks a lot
This is very time consuming for Jeff, what he has done is an excellent piece of work. I thought that he put it down now I see that I was misled. You're doing great keep it going! John
Well, i´m happy there is somone who has done this program, bu as always i´m unlucky. I ahve this problem here. This is waht the message says:
There was an uncaught excpetion while updating the files:
System .AccessViolationException: It was made a try reading or writing to a protected memory.
This indicates often that another memory is damaged.
And more codes is showing up. Tell me if you want to know them. (sorry for my english, it was written in swedish)
Good program by the way :D if it just had to work on my computer!
Crashes When i open it.... 32-bit
Hello there. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this program. I am trying to use it, but unfortunately, though I get the program to run and give me a confirmation that everything is working, all I get when I restart my computer is a progress and "microsoft corporation" under it. Any ideas why it might not be showing my new animation even though it gives me a confirmation? Thank you ahead of time for your help!
@Mehedi Hasan, Smiba - Please email me with more description about what isn't working.
@jay26 - Use the program OpenHiddenSystemPartition.
@Julian - Please email me the output of boot-info along with a copy of your problem.
@araldo - Even if the graphic card supports it, the monitor must support 1024x768 natively. Uploading / installer are incomplete in the current version.
@John Marshall - Thanks.
@Alexander Johansson - That is the error when you have the Windows 8 bootmgr (which stays even if you get rid of Windows 8). This will be fixed in the next version.
@Rudeboydreaming - Has your screen always used the Vista-style green moving bar or did it have the Windows 7 style of four glowing balls come together into the flag? If it has always been Vista-style, then nothing can be done. Your monitor's native resolution must be less than 1024x768.
hi jeff. when i use the boot updater with a .bs7 file. I restart then my pc went straight to STARTUP RECOVERY? why is this happening? and after the recovery finishes, my boot screen looks like the VISTA loading screen. any ideas?
I "made" a cool animation bmp you can get it here http://www.mediafire.com/?8bc1y89iy5503sd
As always people please keep a backup of system 32 on a flash drive, and have hierens boot cd handy when bad things happen!
Thank you for this very useful information. I would like to ask if there's a way to set a wallpaper as the boot screen. Instead of an animated boot screen, I just wanted a wallpaper to appear.
It crashes. Windows 7 32 bit.

This is really professional coding. I absolutely fell in love with the software. The only thing was, for some reason it wasn't able to create a standalone boot-installer: it just shut down when I tried that.
A boot animation PAINSTAKINGLY made by me with photoshop only can be found at http://gxest.deviantart.com/gallery/35171971#/d4ouf2i ... please enjoy all.
Thanks a lot Jeff Bush. I´m quite a newbie at computers even though the windows 7 boot updater worked perfectly. When i used Video2png64 i had to adjust that video file duration to 7 seconds. When video was longer the video2png.bat took pictures only from the first part. I have a dual boot xp x64 and win7 64 machine with sli graphics and raid 0 set drive. Only thing i couldn´t do was standalone installer. I have unpaid loans to banks, no virtual money that is. Can i donate some other way?
due changings with new windows updates from january and february not working, cause failed to disable bootmgr. security
@Andy, Miron, mirec - Some computers just do not work. Please email me your post, the output of boot-info, and tell me if you have or ever had any special boot setups (dual-boot, Windows 8, custom bootloader, ...).
@Andy - To get your Windows 7 boot screen back use "Options > Restore Backups".
@mirec - I have checked the recent Windows 7 Updates and cannot find one that modified bootmgr. Please check that it was a Windows Update and tell me its code (KB#######).
@DUDE, k3ksi - Great!
@k3ksi, Mullikas - Create installer feature is currently broken. Fix coming soon.
@Mullikas - Sorry, donation by PayPal is it. Thanks for the effort though! Non-monetary donations would be solving problems under the "Todo" list.
@Jorge - You can set the animation to a single 1 pixel transparent image to make it so it seems as though no animation is happening.
