New Server

I have a new server! It is now a VPS with Green Geeks instead of shared hosting with a different company. This means there should be much better performance and I should be able to add the boot skin sharing system now without going over my limits of bandwidth and space usage (however, it still needs to be finished so I won't release it right away). Also, comments have been re-enabled everywhere and ads have been added to every page.

Server Issues

My hosting company emailed me today saying:

We regret to say that database 'jeffblog' is currently consuming excessive resources on our servers which causes our server to degrade its performance affecting all other customers database driven sites that are hosted on this server.

...

If your usage of database queries is not significantly reduced within three (3) business days, we will be forced to suspend your account, as our hosting accounts are not intended for such extreme usage of queries.

Google Page Speed Service

For the last two years Google has had a page speed analysis service to check for any bottlenecks on the setup of your website (such as compressed HTTP connections, caching static resources, etc). Last year they published an Apache module to perform many typical speedups seamlessly for web requests.

Now they are offering a hosted service called Google Page Speed Service. All you have to do is signup for an account and change your DNS servers to point to their servers and the optimizations are automatically applied! Social Media Incoming!

I upgraded the website today and the major "enhancement" is the addition of the social media links for following updates to the website and programs on Twitter (@coder_for_life) and Facebook (Coder for Life). I hope to increase the presence of these features over the entire website, including "liking" articles. I already have gone one step in the right direction with this an have added Open Graph tags on every page (although the required "og:image" and recommended "og:description" are not available for non-project pages yet).
